What is wellness?
Wellness is the conscious decision to make choices towards living a healthier and more fulfilling life. Wellness is an individualized goal of reaching your full potential, and practicing wellness involves positive experiences in eight areas: emotions, environment, finances, occupation, intellect, physical, social, and spirit.
Emotional wellness means coping with life effectively and having satisfying relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances.
Enjoying environmental wellness involves surrounding yourself in a pleasing, stimulating environment. It also means understanding the impact your actions have on the environment you live in and the world.
Being financially well involves having enough money to satisfy your needs now and in the future.
Individuals with occupational wellness are happy with the work they do and in the environment they work in.
Intellectual wellness means you recognize your unique abilities, talents, and creativity and find ways to continuously expand your knowledge and skills.
Physical wellness is related to having good physical health practices, including exercise, nutrition, and getting enough sleep.
Being socially well means you have a support system, feel a sense of belonging to your family and community, and feel connected.
Spiritual wellness means you feel a sense of purpose and meaning in your life.
What’s the difference between health and wellness?
You can be in good health without being well, just as you can practice wellness while living with disease.
Someone who is in good health is someone who does not have disease and is in a healthy mental state, while wellness is the actions you take to lead a healthy lifestyle.
The main difference between health and wellness is that health focuses more on illness, genetics, and disease while wellness focuses on all areas of your life to improve your condition and find balance. Dr. Lyons promotes overall wellness to help you lead a healthier, more fulfilling life.
How can I improve my wellness?
Improving wellness involves taking all eight areas of wellness into consideration when making decisions. A decision could provide a positive outcome in one area while creating negative experiences in another that may cause you to feel unwell.
For example, you may accept a new promotion at work that pays a larger salary, which fulfills your occupational and financial wellness, but it could result in less time with your family and reduced time for physical exercise. The promotion improves your occupational and financial wealth but decreases your physical and social health.
With Lyons Family Medicine and its unique concierge medicine approach, you establish wellness goals through personal coaching that improves your overall wellness across all eight areas.
